Website Accessibility
This page describes features that make the website more accessible, particularly to those with disabilities. This page does not describe our services: we also undertake accessibility planning, and often deal with accessible vehicles. Isn't "access" a wonderful word?
Access Keys
The following access keys are supported. These are common to most UK government websites:
- n - Skip to navigation.
- s - Skip to content.
- 0 - Website accessibility help (this page).
- 1 - Home page.
- 2 - News.
- 4 - Search.
- 8 - Copyright.
- 9 - Contact.
Most modern browser software supports Access Keys. For example, in Internet Explorer on Windows, press Alt, followed by the key listed above, followed by Return. In Firefox simply press Alt followed by the key listed above.
Features and Standards
We have tried to make this website as accessible as possible. We aim meet at least priority level two ("AA") of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. All regular pages are standards compliant (XHTML 1.0 and CSS 1, to be precise).
What does this means? Among other things:
- All text can be made larger using your browser's features. For example, in Internet Explorer or Firefox, select View and Text Size.
- Pages will display and be readable in any browser, including most small-screen portable devices, and text-only readers.
- Styles (colours and layout) can be over-ridden. For example, in Firefox, select View and Page Style.
Site Layout
The key sections of the website are:
- About Us - What we do, why we do it, and what makes us different. Includes staff profiles.
- Services - List of services we offer, with a grouping of information by topic.
- Projects - List of all projects undertaken, with summaries.
- Features - Articles and conference papers.
- News - List of all news items and newsletters.
- Contact - Contact details and map.
A search box is available at the top of each page.
Portable Document Format
Certain files are only available in PDF. You may read this format using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Unfortunately full accessibility is not guaranteed. Many of these documents are either historic (certain older project summaries), or primarily intended to be printed (such as reports).
It is our current policy to only use PDF format for large documents, particularly those involving graphs, formula, or other features which are too time-consuming to convert to HTML format.
